Annotation score:5 out of 5

The annotation score provides a heuristic measure of the annotation content of a UniProtKB entry or proteome. This score cannot be used as a measure of the accuracy of the annotation as we cannot define the 'correct annotation' for any given protein.

This section provides any useful information about the protein, mostly biological knowledge.
Functioni

Bifunctional enzyme that catalyzes the reactions from geranylgeranyl diphosphate to phytoene (phytoene synthase) and lycopene to beta-carotene via the intermediate gamma-carotene (lycopene cyclase). The cyclase preferentially catalyzes the symmetric cyclization of both ends of the substrate to produce dicyclic carotenoids. Beta-carotene is further processed to the acidic carotenoid astaxanthin.2 Publications

Pathwayi: phytoene biosynthesis

This protein is involved in step 1 of the subpathway that synthesizes all-trans-phytoene from geranylgeranyl diphosphate.
Proteins known to be involved in this subpathway in this organism are:
 1. Bifunctional lycopene cyclase/phytoene synthase (crtYB)
This subpathway is part of the pathway phytoene biosynthesis, which is itself part of Carotenoid biosynthesis.
