Catalytic subunit of the dimeric rfl-1 (uba-3)-ula-1 E1 enzyme. E1 activates NEDD8 by first adenylating its C-terminal glycine residue with ATP, thereafter linking this residue to the side chain of the catalytic cysteine, yielding a NEDD8-uba-3 thioester and free AMP. E1 finally transfers NEDD8 to the catalytic cysteine of ubc-12 (By similarity).

Required for cytokinesis and mitotic spindle orientation during early embryogenesis (PubMed:11847342, PubMed:19528325).

<p>The checksum is a form of redundancy check that is calculated from the sequence. It is useful for tracking sequence updates.</p> <p>It should be noted that while, in theory, two different sequences could have the same checksum value, the likelihood that this would happen is extremely low.</p> <p>However UniProtKB may contain entries with identical sequences in case of multiple genes (paralogs).</p> <p>The checksum is computed as the sequence 64-bit Cyclic Redundancy Check value (CRC64) using the generator polynomial: x<sup>64</sup> + x<sup>4</sup> + x<sup>3</sup> + x + 1.
