Functioni

Snake venom phospholipase A2 homolog that lacks enzymatic activity but is myotoxic. Induces a temperature and dose-dependent complete and irreversible blockade of neuromuscular contraction in an indirectly stimulated chick biventer cervicic nerve-muscle preparation and mouse phrenic nerve-diaphragm preparation. Does not inhibit contraction of chick biventer cervicic nerve-muscle preparation in response to treatment with acetylcholine or KCl. The neuromuscular blockade produced by BaTX is mediated by inhibitory action at the presynaptic motor nerve endings. Rapidy lyses skeletal myoblasts in vitro, and intramuscular injection in mice causes severe muscle necrosis by a non-enzymatic mechanism. Induces a dose-dependent edema in the mouse foot pad.3 Publications
