UniProtKB - P0DSJ4 (TX11A_MYRGU)
Protein
U-myrmeciitoxin(01)-Mg1a
Gene
N/A
Organism
Myrmecia gulosa (Red bulldog ant)
Status
Functioni
Toxin that may interact with target cell membranes, producing a concentration-dependent leak in ion conductance, possibly via multimeric pore formation (Probable). It produces an immediate sharp increase of calcium concentration in all DRG neurons (PubMed:30214940). This influx in calcium stabilizes without resulting in any observable dye leakage, showing that the effect is not simply cytolytic (PubMed:30214940). This toxin may be one of the major contributors to the pain associated with envenomation (PubMed:30214940). The toxin also displays a weak cytotoxicity (on HEK cells) and some antimicrobial activity (MIC=2.5 µM on C.neoformans (var. grubii), MIC=10.2 µM on S.aureus), but is not hemolytic to human erythtrocytes (PubMed:30214940). In vivo, intraplantar injection into mice causes spontaneous nocifensive behavior (licking, flinching, or shaking of the paw), which lasts 5-7 minutes (10 and 100 µM tested). Mechanical and heat hypoalgesia are observed at 20 and 25 minutes after injection (highest dose tested of 100 µM) (PubMed:30214940). In vivo, injection into crickets (A.domesticus) causes an immediate, dose-dependent, reversible and nonlethal incapacitation that lasts about 53 minutes at the highest dose tested (60 µg/g) (PubMed:30214940).1 Publication
