Alteromonas macleodii is a common marine heterotrophic gamma-proteobacterium. It blooms under conditions of sudden increase in the availability of resources (probably dissolved organic matter released or exudated by phytoplankton blooms). It represent a significant fraction of the bacterial population associated with particles or aggregates (2-5 mm filters) in temperate or tropical waters with average temperatures above 10 degrees Celsius; it is abundant at medium photic zone depths (25-100 m). Isolates cluster by molecular analysis into two major genotypic groups or ecotypes, one found in temperate latitudes in the upper water column and another that is for the most part found in the deep water column of the Mediterranean (where the deep water mass never gets below 12 degrees Celsius).

Strain Black Sea 11 was isolated from the Black Sea near the Karadag reservation off the Crimean peninsula (Ukraine). This study sequenced and compared 3 new surface isolates to the already sequenced deep sea isolate (strain DSM 17117 / Deep ecotype, ALTMD) and the Hawaiian type strain (ATCC 27126, which unfortunately has only been sequenced as a wgs with 716 contigs). The 3 new surface isolates are quite similar, the most divergent being the one from the Black Sea (BS11). The surface clade is globally abundant with little effect of geography, and is more physiologically diverse than the deep water Mediterranean strain. Evidence suggests that even the deep water Mediterranean strain and the BS11 genomes recruit from surface samples in open ocean locations (adapted from PMID 23019517).
