Anabaena variabilis ATCC 29413 is a filamentous heterocyst-forming cyanobacterium that fixes nitrogen and CO2 using the energy of sunlight via oxygen-evolving plant-type photosynthesis. It has also been studied extensively for the production of hydrogen using solar energy. It has a complex life cycle that includes different types of differentiated cells including heterocysts for nitrogen fixation, akinetes (spores) for survival while nitrogen stress may also induce the formation of motile filaments called hormogonia. It has been studied extensively since its isolation in 1964 and is the strain of choice for many laboratories throughout the world (modified from PMID 25197444).
