Sclerotinia sclerotiorum belongs to the order Helotiales in the phylum Ascomycota. As a necrotroph with very broad host range, S. sclerotiorum is of economic importance due to its destructive potential as a plant pathogen. The species name reflects the fungus's ability to produce sclerotia, melanized bodies hardened against environmental stresses.
