Drosophila sechellia is a member of the melanogaster group and is an island endemic with small populations on some the Seychelles. It is an important model for speciation because it can mate with the cosmopolitan species D. simulans to produce fertile females and sterile males.

D. sechellia is one of 12 fruit fly genomes sequenced for a large comparative study by the Drosophila 12 Genomes Consortium. Its genome is 171 Mb in size and contains 16, 884 protein-coding genes (81% of which have homologues in D. melanogaster).
