Dictyostelium purpureum is a species of social amoeba, closely related to the model organism D. discoideum. Like D. discoideum, it has the remarkable ability to switch from a solitary form to a multicellular fruiting body, although there are a number of developmental and morphological differences between the two species. Comparative analysis of the genome will help to shed light on the biology and evolution of the social amoebae, and also aid research into basic cellular processes such as chemotaxis, phagocytosis, apoptosis, signal transduction and cell differentiation.

The genome of D. purpureum (strain DpAX1) was published in 2011. The genome size is 33 Mb.
