Jonesia denitrificans CIP 55134 was isolated from boiled ox blood in about 1948. It is a Gram-positive nonspore-forming, motile rod that is catalase positive, oxidase negative, and facultatively anaerobic. It grows as irregular, nonsporing rods (0.3 by 0.5 um) showing branched Y- and clublike forms, although filamentous and coccoid cells may occur in older cultures. Its major menaquinone is MK-9 (adapted from Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol. (1987), 37:266).
