Thermococcus kodakaraensis KOD1 (Pyrococcus kodakaraensis KOD1), has been isolated from a solfatara on Kodakara Island, Kagoshima, Japan. It is a hyperthermophile organism, which grows between 65 and 100 degrees Celsius. The members of the Thermococcus genus are ubiquitously present in natural high-temperature environments, and are therefore considered to play a major role in the ecology and metabolic activity of microbial consortia within hot-water ecosystems.
