Methanococcus maripaludis (strain C5 / ATCC BAA-1333) is a motile, mesophilic (temperature optima of about 35-40 degrees Celsius and pH optimum for growth is between 6 and 8), obligately anaerobic archaeon of the phylum Euryarchaeota. It is a rapidly growing hydrogenotrophic methanoarchaeon common in salt marshes, marine and estuarine environments in the southeastern U.S.A. and probably elsewhere. It is obligately methanogenic; hydrogen and formate serve as electron donors, but acetate, alcohols including isopropanol and methylamines are not substrates for methanogenesis. All strains grow autotrophically in mineral medium. Amino acids and acetate are frequently stimulatory for growth. Nitrogen sources include ammonium, N2 gas and alanine. The ability to use alanine is distinctive for members of this species. Sulfur sources include sulfide and elemental sulfur. Storage materials include glycogen. M. maripaludis stands out among methanogenic archaea as an ideal model species because of fast reproducible growth and effective genetic tools.
