Definition

Dense core vesicle that is part of a neuron. Stores and releases neuropeptides (peptide neurotransmitters) and neurotrophins by exocytosis. Filled with cargo at the Golgi network, they are transported through axons and dendrites to the synapses where the release takes place. They can be found in all parts of neurons, including the soma, dendrites, axonal swellings (varicosities) and synaptic terminals.
