Protein that uses enzyme activity to effect transmembrane transport, as exemplified by transmembrane transport coupled to ATP hydrolysis and oxidoreductases involved in transmembrane proton or electron transport. Not to be confused with ligand-gated ion channels or other transmembrane transporters without enzyme activity.
