Definition

Virion surface protein implicated in the initial binding to a specific host adhesion molecule. Adhesion receptors can be for example proteoglycans, sialic acids or a protein receptor. This initial attachment is not sufficient for triggering virus entry into host cell. In prokaryotic viruses, the primary attachment is called reversible adsorption.
