Viral protein part of the virion base plate of tailed prokaryotic viruses such as Caudovirales. The baseplate is a multiprotein component at the end of the tail and to which fibers of tailed phages may be attached. Sometimes referred to as the tail tip or tip structure in Siphoviridae.
