Viral membrane-lytic protein, usually associated with the viral capsid or released through partial programmed disassembly of the capsid, that induces major rupture of the bilayer integrity of host endosomal, lysosomal, or caveosomal membrane to allow viral escape and penetration into the cytoplasm. These viral lytic proteins may need to be activated, mostly through endosomal acidic pH or receptor binding to display membrane lytic activity. Viruses such as human adenoviruses group C and D lyse the host endosomal membrane to penetrate into the host cytoplasm.
