Protein which, if defective, causes mitochondrial encephalomyopathy with lactic acidosis and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) syndrome, a genetically heterogeneous disorder, characterized by episodic vomiting, seizures, and recurrent cerebral insults resembling strokes and causing hemiparesis, hemianopsia, or cortical blindness.
