Definition
Viral protein part of the virion tail tube of prokaryotic viruses such as Caudovirales. The tail tube is the channel for DNA ejection into the host cytoplasm and can be wrapped in an external contractile envelope in some viruses (e.g. Myoviridae). Also called tail shaft in some Siphoviridae.
