Keyword - Ribosomal skipping (KW-1197)

Protein produced by ribosomal 'skipping', in which a specific sequence in the nascent peptide chain prevents the ribosome from creating the peptide bond with the next proline. Nevertheless, translation continues and gives rise to a second chain. This mechanism results in apparent co-translational cleavage of the polyprotein. This process is induced by a '2A-like', or CHYSEL (cis-acting hydrolase element) sequence.
