General annotation (Comments)

Function

UDPGTs are of major importance in the conjugation and subsequent elimination of potentially toxic xenobiotics and endogenous compounds. This isozyme has glucuronidating capacity on 6 steroids and the bile acid, hyodeoxycholic acid. May potentially play an important role in estrogen and androgen catabolism in peripheral steroid target tissues.

Catalytic activity

UDP-glucuronate + acceptor = UDP + acceptor beta-D-glucuronoside.

Subcellular location

Microsome membrane; Single-pass membrane protein Potential. Endoplasmic reticulum membrane; Single-pass membrane protein Potential.

Tissue specificity

Expressed in several tissues, including the prostate, mammary gland, epididymis, testis and ovary. Ref.1

Sequence similarities

Belongs to the UDP-glycosyltransferase family.

Biophysicochemical properties

Kinetic parameters:

KM=0.9 µM for androsterone

KM=13.5 µM for 3-alpha-diol

KM=1.6 µM for estriol

KM=5.7 µM for 4-hydroxyestrone
