General annotation (Comments)

Function

Enzyme which catalyzes the acetylation of polyamines. Substrate specificity: norspermidine = spermidine >> spermine > N(1)-acetylspermine > putrescine. This highly regulated enzyme allows a fine attenuation of the intracellular concentration of polyamines. Also involved in the regulation of polyamine transport out of cells By similarity.

Catalytic activity

Acetyl-CoA + an alkane-alpha,omega-diamine = CoA + an N-acetyldiamine.

Pathway

Amine and polyamine degradation; putrescine degradation; N-acetylputrescine from putrescine: step 1/1.

Subunit structure

Homodimer By similarity.

Subcellular location

Cytoplasm By similarity.

Polymorphism

SSAT activity and regulation were altered in C55.7Res cells, an N1,N(12)-bis(ethyl)spermine-resistant derivative of the Chinese hamster ovary cell line C55.7. Basal activity was decreased, and no activity induction resulted from exposure to analogue concentrations, which caused 300-fold enzyme induction in parental cells, was observed. SSAT mRNA levels in the absence and presence of analogue were unchanged, but no SSAT protein was detected in C55.7Res cells.

Sequence similarities

Belongs to the acetyltransferase family.

Contains 1 N-acetyltransferase domain.
