General annotation (Comments)
| Function | Enzyme which catalyzes the acetylation of polyamines. Substrate specificity: norspermidine = spermidine >> spermine > N(1)-acetylspermine > putrescine. This highly regulated enzyme allows a fine attenuation of the intracellular concentration of polyamines. Also involved in the regulation of polyamine transport out of cells By similarity. |
| Catalytic activity | Acetyl-CoA + an alkane-alpha,omega-diamine = CoA + an N-acetyldiamine. |
| Pathway | |
| Subunit structure | Homodimer By similarity. |
| Subcellular location | Cytoplasm By similarity. |
| Polymorphism | SSAT activity and regulation were altered in C55.7Res cells, an N1,N(12)-bis(ethyl)spermine-resistant derivative of the Chinese hamster ovary cell line C55.7. Basal activity was decreased, and no activity induction resulted from exposure to analogue concentrations, which caused 300-fold enzyme induction in parental cells, was observed. SSAT mRNA levels in the absence and presence of analogue were unchanged, but no SSAT protein was detected in C55.7Res cells. |
| Sequence similarities | Belongs to the acetyltransferase family. Contains 1 N-acetyltransferase domain. |
