General annotation (Comments)

Function

Regulator of short-term neuronal synaptic plasticity in the dentate gyrus. Associates with AMPA receptors (ionotropic glutamate receptors) in synaptic spines and promotes AMPA receptor desensitization at excitatory synapses. Ref.1

Subunit structure

Component of some AMPA receptors (ionotropic glutamate receptors) complex, at least composed of some AMPA receptor (GRIA1, GRIA2 and/or GRIA3), CACNG2 and SHISA9, as well as low level of DLG4. Ref.1

Subcellular location

Cell projectiondendritic spine membrane; Single-pass type I membrane protein. Cell junctionsynapse Ref.1.

Tissue specificity

Brain-specific. Mainly expressed in neurons, including in hippocampus, cerebral cortex, striatum, thalamus, olfactory bulb and cerebellum. Expressed in most brain structures during embryonic and postnatal development. Ref.1

Domain

The extracellular domain contains a pattern of cysteine similar to the snail conotoxin Con-ikot-ikot (AC P0CB20), a toxin known to disrupt AMPA receptors (ionotropic glutamate receptor) desensitization (Ref.1).

Disruption phenotype

Induces an increase in the paired-pulse ratio of AMPA currents in lateral and medial perforant path-granule cell synapses. Ref.1

Sequence similarities

Belongs to the shisa family. SHISA9 subfamily.

Sequence caution

The sequence BAB28201.1 differs from that shown. Reason: Erroneous initiation. Translation N-terminally shortened.

Alternative products

This entry describes 4 isoforms produced by alternative splicing. [Align] [Select]
Isoform 1 (identifier: Q9CZN4-1)

This isoform has been chosen as the 'canonical' sequence. All positional information in this entry refers to it. This is also the sequence that appears in the downloadable versions of the entry.
Isoform 2 (identifier: Q9CZN4-2)

The sequence of this isoform differs from the canonical sequence as follows:
     189-194: ALADVM → RIQRSF
     195-424: Missing.
Note: No experimental confirmation available. May be produced at very low levels due to a premature stop codon in the mRNA, leading to nonsense-mediated mRNA decay.
Isoform 3 (identifier: Q9CZN4-3)

Also known as: Ckamp44a;

The sequence of this isoform differs from the canonical sequence as follows:
     231-231: Missing.
Note: Produced by aberrant splicing sites.
Isoform 4 (identifier: Q9CZN4-4)

Also known as: Ckamp44b;

The sequence of this isoform differs from the canonical sequence as follows:
     231-231: Missing.
     283-298: Missing.
Note: Produced by aberrant splicing sites.
