General annotation (Comments)

Function

Converts progesterone to its inactive form, 20-alpha-dihydroxyprogesterone (20-alpha-OHP). In the liver and intestine, may have a role in the transport of bile. May have a role in monitoring the intrahepatic bile acid concentration. May play a role in myelin formation. Can oxidize both 20-alpha- and 3-alpha-hydroxysteroids. Low activity towards 5-alpha-androstan-17-beta-ol-3-one. Can also act on non-steroidal substrates such as S-indan-1-ol, S-tetralol and 4-chromanol.

Catalytic activity

17-alpha,20-alpha-dihydroxypregn-4-en-3-one + NAD(P)+ = 17-alpha-hydroxyprogesterone + NAD(P)H.

Indan-1-ol + NAD(P)+ = indanone + NAD(P)H.

Enzyme regulation

Potently inhibited by benzbromarone and 3',3", 5', 5"-tetrabromophenolphthalein (TBPP).

Subunit structure

Monomer By similarity.

Subcellular location

Cytoplasm By similarity.

Sequence similarities

Belongs to the aldo/keto reductase family.
