General annotation (Comments)

Function

Pattern receptor that binds to murein peptidoglycans (PGN) of Gram-positive bacteria. Has bactericidal activity towards Gram-positive bacteria. May kill Gram-positive bacteria by interfering with peptidoglycan biosynthesis. Binds also to Gram-negative bacteria. Involved in innate immunity. Is microbicidal for Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and yeast. Ref.1 Ref.4

Subunit structure

Homodimer; disulfide-linked.

Subcellular location

Secreted. Cytoplasmic granule Ref.4.

Tissue specificity

Synthesized only in bone marrow. The mature protein is stored in the cytoplasmic granules of eosinophils and neutrophils but is absent from monocytes, lymphocytes, or platelets. Ref.1

Sequence similarities

Belongs to the N-acetylmuramoyl-L-alanine amidase 2 family.
