General annotation (Comments)

Function

CaM-kinase II (CAMK2) is a prominent kinase in the central nervous system By similarity.

Catalytic activity

ATP + a protein = ADP + a phosphoprotein.

Enzyme regulation

Autophosphorylation of CAMK2 plays an important role in the regulation of the kinase activity By similarity.

Subunit structure

CAMK2 is composed of four different chains: alpha, beta, gamma, and delta. The different isoforms assemble into homo- or heteromultimeric holoenzymes composed of 8 to 12 subunits By similarity.

Tissue specificity

First detected at 18 hpf. At 24 hpf, expressed in discrete anterior locations and along either side of the midline. At 48 hpf, expression is predominantly in the forebrain, and then accumulates in the forebrain, hindbrain, and retinal epithelium at 72 hpf. Ref.2

Sequence similarities

Belongs to the protein kinase superfamily. CAMK Ser/Thr protein kinase family. CaMK subfamily.

Contains 1 protein kinase domain.

Alternative products

This entry describes 3 isoforms produced by alternative splicing. [Align] [Select]
Isoform O (identifier: Q6DGS3-1)

This isoform has been chosen as the 'canonical' sequence. All positional information in this entry refers to it. This is also the sequence that appears in the downloadable versions of the entry.

The sequence of this isoform differs from the canonical sequence as follows:
     379-419: Missing.
Isoform E (identifier: Q6DGS3-3)

The sequence of this isoform differs from the canonical sequence as follows:
     329-348: Missing.
     379-419: Missing.
