General annotation (Comments)

Function

Capable of catalyzing the interconversion of testosterone and androstenedione, as well as estradiol and estrone. Favors the oxidation of estradiol and testosterone. Also has 20-alpha-HSD activity. Uses NADH while EDH17B3 uses NADPH By similarity.

Catalytic activity

17-beta-estradiol + NAD(P)+ = estrone + NAD(P)H.

Testosterone + NAD+ = androstenedione + NADH.

Subcellular location

Membrane; Single-pass type II membrane protein Potential.

Tissue specificity

Highest expression in placenta.

Sequence similarities

Belongs to the short-chain dehydrogenases/reductases (SDR) family.
