General annotation (Comments)

Function

RNA-binding protein that plays a central role in spermatogenesis. Required for meiotic entry and germline differentiation, at the transition between G2 and M phases of meiosis I. Acts by regulating translation of specific mRNAs, possibly by binding to their 3'-UTR. Essential for translation of twine (twe) mRNA. Required for the expression of various genes such as CG6784, CG17210, CG15841 scpr-B, scpr-C, and rho-6. Ref.1 Ref.6 Ref.7

Subcellular location

Nucleus. Cytoplasm. Note: Nuclear in primary spermatocytes until near the end of the meiotic prophase and cytoplasmic localization from then onward. Ref.5

Tissue specificity

Testis specific. Ref.1

Developmental stage

Not expressed in embryos. Expressed in larvae, pupae and adult males. Expressed during spermatogenesis. Ref.1

Sequence similarities

Belongs to the RRM DAZ family.

Contains 1 DAZ-like domain.

Contains 1 RRM (RNA recognition motif) domain.

Sequence caution

The sequence AAL90061.1 differs from that shown. Reason: Erroneous translation. Wrong choice of frame.

Alternative products

This entry describes 2 isoforms produced by alternative splicing. [Align] [Select]
Isoform 1 (identifier: Q24207-1)

This isoform has been chosen as the 'canonical' sequence. All positional information in this entry refers to it. This is also the sequence that appears in the downloadable versions of the entry.
Isoform 2 (identifier: Q24207-2)

The sequence of this isoform differs from the canonical sequence as follows:
     189-189: E → G
     190-190: Missing.
Note: No experimental confirmation available.
