Functioni

Channel that opens in response to stretch forces in the membrane lipid bilayer. The force required to trigger channel opening depends on the nature of the membrane lipids; the presence of phosphatidylinositol enhances mechanosensitivity of the channel. May participate in the regulation of osmotic pressure changes within the cell.1 Publication

E.coli inner membranes are often used to measure the activity of heterologously expressed channels, but the lipid composition of E.coli membranes differs considerably from that of M.tuberculosis. Phosphatidylinositol is one of the major constituents of M.tuberculosis membranes, but not of E.coli membranes, and this affects channel activity.1 Publication
