General annotation (Comments)

Function

Component of the anaerobic respiratory chain that transforms nitrate to dinitrogen (denitrification). NorB is the catalytic subunit of the enzyme complex. Shows proton pump activity across the membrane in denitrifying bacterial cells. The mononitrogen reduction is probably coupled to electron transport phosphorylation.

Catalytic activity

Nitrous oxide + acceptor + H(2)O = 2 nitric oxide + reduced acceptor.

Pathway

Nitrogen metabolism; nitrate reduction (denitrification); dinitrogen from nitrate: step 3/4.

Subunit structure

Heterodimer of cytochromes b (large subunit) and c (small subunit).

Subcellular location

Cell membrane; Multi-pass membrane proteinPotential.

Induction

By nitric oxide Probable.

Sequence similarities

Belongs to the heme-copper respiratory oxidase family.
