General annotation (Comments)

Function

Cytochromes P450 are a group of heme-thiolate monooxygenases. In liver microsomes, this enzyme is involved in an NADPH-dependent electron transport pathway. It oxidizes a variety of structurally unrelated compounds, including steroids, fatty acids, and xenobiotics.

Catalytic activity

RH + reduced flavoprotein + O2 = ROH + oxidized flavoprotein + H2O.

Cofactor

Heme group By similarity.

Subcellular location

Endoplasmic reticulum membrane; Peripheral membrane protein. Microsome membrane; Peripheral membrane protein.

Induction

By oxygen; in lung.

Miscellaneous

Increased expression of this enzyme in lung due to oxygen exposure has been related to hyperoxic injury in microvascular endothelium.

Sequence similarities

Belongs to the cytochrome P450 family.

Caution

It is uncertain whether Met-1 or Met-4 is the initiator.

Sequence caution

The sequence AAD14317.1 differs from that shown. Reason: Frameshift at position 333.
