General annotation (Comments)

Function

PA2 catalyzes the calcium-dependent hydrolysis of the 2-acyl groups in 3-sn-phosphoglycerides. Testis PA2 may be important in the production of prostaglandins, by the release of arachidonic acid, which in turn are necessary for the contractions of the seminiferous tubules and the testicular capsule; they also seem to decrease sperm transit time through the male reproductive tract.

Catalytic activity

Phosphatidylcholine + H2O = 1-acylglycerophosphocholine + a carboxylate.

Cofactor

Binds 1 calcium ion per subunit By similarity.

Subcellular location

Secreted Potential.

Tissue specificity

Testis specific.

Developmental stage

Expressed mainly in pachytene and secondary spermatocytes and round spermatids and predominates in stage VI-VII tubules.

Sequence similarities

Belongs to the phospholipase A2 family.
