Functioni

Catalytic activityi

ATP + (R)-mevalonate = ADP + (R)-5-phosphomevalonate.

Enzyme regulationi

Its activity is inhibited in vitro by geranyl pyrophosphate (GPP) and farnesyl pyrophosphate (FPP) that bind competitively at the ATP-binding site on the enzyme.

This protein is involved in step 1 of the subpathway that synthesizes isopentenyl diphosphate from (R)-mevalonate.
