General annotation (Comments)

Catalytic activity

N-acetyl-D-galactosamine 6-phosphate + H2O = D-galactosamine 6-phosphate + acetate.

Miscellaneous

In contrast to E.coli strains C and EC3132, K-12 strains can not grow on N-acetylgalactosamine and D-galactosamine, because they carry a deletion and thus lack active PTS systems specific for these compounds. Therefore, agaA in K-12 strains is not involved in the degradation of these compounds.

Sequence similarities

Belongs to the nagA family.

Caution

Could be the product of a pseudogene.

Sequence caution

The sequence AAA57938.1 differs from that shown. Reason: Frameshift at position 114.
