General annotation (Comments)

Function

Can catalyze the hydrolysis of ATP in the presence of single-stranded DNA, the ATP-dependent uptake of single-stranded DNA by duplex DNA, and the ATP-dependent hybridization of homologous single-stranded DNAs. It interacts with lexA causing its activation and leading to its autocatalytic cleavage. HAMAP MF_00268

Deletion of this gene leads to the inability of the bacteria to perform homologous recombination, and markedly increases UV sensitivity. HAMAP MF_00268

Subcellular location

Cytoplasm By similarity.

Post-translational modification

The protein migrates as a 40 kDa protein in strains 69A and NCTC 11637. When overexpressed in E.coli a 38 kDa protein is made which is unable to complement the E.coli deletion mutant. It has been suggested this size difference is due to a post-translational modification. HAMAP MF_00268

Sequence similarities

Belongs to the recA family.
