General annotation (Comments)

Function

Cardiac hormone which may function as a paracrine antifibrotic factor in the heart. Also plays a key role in cardiovascular homeostasis through natriuresis, diuresis, vasorelaxation, and inhibition of renin and aldosterone secretion. Specifically binds and stimulates the cGMP production of the NPR1 receptor. Binds the clearance receptor NPR3.

Subcellular location

Secreted.

Tissue specificity

Expressed abundantly in the ventricle, and in a lesser extent in the atrium.

Disruption phenotype

Mice are viable and fertile and do not display gross skeletal abnormalities. Fluid-electrolyte balance and blood pressure remain normal although an increased rate of focal fibrotic lesions is observed within the cardiac ventricles. Ref.4

Sequence similarities

Belongs to the natriuretic peptide family.
