General annotation (Comments)

Function

This protein may play a central role in corneal transparency. It represents about 50 percent of the corneal epithelial soluble proteins. In the cornea, this enzyme may help in absorbing the damaging UV-B, as well as detoxicating the UV-induced peroxidic aldehydes.

This protein preferentially oxidizes aromatic aldehyde substrates.

Catalytic activity

An aldehyde + NAD(P)+ + H2O = an acid + NAD(P)H.

Subunit structure

Homodimer By similarity.

Subcellular location

Cytoplasm By similarity.

Sequence similarities

Belongs to the aldehyde dehydrogenase family.
