Protein

Catenin beta

Gene

ctnnb1

Organism
Xenopus laevis (African clawed frog)
Status
Reviewed - Annotation score: 5 out of 5- Experimental evidence at protein leveli

Functioni

Key downstream component of the canonical Wnt signaling pathway. In the presence of Wnt ligand, accumulates in the nucleus, where it acts as a coactivator for transcription factors of the TCF/LEF family, leading to activate Wnt responsive genes (By similarity).By similarity
Binds to the cytoplasmic domain of the cell-cell adhesion molecule E-cadherin, and perhaps to other (membrane) proteins. The association of catenins to cadherins produces a complex which is linked to the actin filament network, and which seems to be of primary importance for cadherins cell-adhesion properties. Essential component of the vertebrate Wnt-signaling pathway and is required for formation of the embryonic axis.
