Involved in the biosynthesis of carotenoids. Catalyzes the condensation of two molecules of geranylgeranyl diphosphate (GGPP) to give prephytoene diphosphate (PPPP) and the subsequent rearrangement of the cyclopropylcarbinyl intermediate to yield phytoene Probable. Ref.2
