Sequence statusComplete.
Protein existenceEvidence at protein level.

General annotation (Comments)

Function

Converts testosterone into 5-alpha-dihydrotestosterone and progesterone or corticosterone into their corresponding 5-alpha-3-oxosteroids. It plays a central role in sexual differentiation and androgen physiology.

Catalytic activity

A 3-oxo-5-alpha-steroid + acceptor = a 3-oxo-Delta(4)-steroid + reduced acceptor.

Subcellular location

Microsome membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein. Endoplasmic reticulum membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein Potential.

Tissue specificity

Liver and prostate (at a low level).

Induction

Its expression is regulated by androgens such as testosterone.

Sequence similarities

Belongs to the steroid 5-alpha reductase family.

Biophysicochemical properties

pH dependence:

Optimally active at alkaline pHs.
