Function

DHPS catalyzes the formation of the immediate precursor of folic acid. Implicated in resistance to sulfonamide. The type II enzyme is stable whereas type I DHPS loses its activity rapidly By similarity.

(2-amino-4-hydroxy-7,8-dihydropteridin-6-yl)methyl diphosphate + 4-aminobenzoate = diphosphate + dihydropteroate.
