General annotation (Comments)
Essential for establishment of a previously unmethylated plasmid transformed into the cell as single stranded DNA. Recognizes the single- or double-stranded sequence GATC, causes specific methylation on A-2 on one or both strands (respectively), and protects the DNA from cleavage by the DpnII endonuclease. Ref.3
S-adenosyl-L-methionine + DNA adenine = S-adenosyl-L-homocysteine + DNA 6-methylaminopurine.
The DpnII restriction system has two different methylases.
Belongs to the N(4)/N(6)-methyltransferase family.
