General annotation (Comments)

Function

This peptide hormone induces gall bladder contraction and the release of pancreatic enzymes in the gut. Its function in the brain is not clear. Binding to CCK-A receptors stimulates amylase release from the pancreas, binding to CCK-B receptors stimulates gastric acid secretion.

Subunit structure

Binds to CCK-A receptors in the pancreas and CCK-B receptors in the brain By similarity.

Subcellular location

Secreted.

Tissue specificity

Synthesized in both cerebral cortex and duodenal mucosa.

Post-translational modification

The precursor is cleaved by proteases to produce a number of active cholecystokinins. Brain contains CCK-octapeptide (CCK8) and several CCK-desoctapeptides; whereas pig gut contains intact CCK33, CCK39, and CCK58 as well as CCK-octapeptide and the CCK-desoctapeptides. Distribution differences are due to tissue-specific post-translational processing events.

Sequence similarities

Belongs to the gastrin/cholecystokinin family.
