General annotation (Comments)

Function

Calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase belonging to a proposed calcium-triggered signaling cascade. In vitro, isoform 1 and isoform 2 phosphorylate CREB1, SYN1/synapsin I. Phosphorylates and activates CAMK1. Ref.2

Catalytic activity

ATP + a protein = ADP + a phosphoprotein.

Enzyme regulation

Activated by Ca2+/calmodulin. Must be phosphorylated to be maximally active. Activated by CAMKK1. Ref.2

Subcellular location

Cytoplasm By similarity. Nucleus By similarity.

Tissue specificity

Isoform 1 is expressed in liver, heart, lung, kidney, spleen and testis. Isoform 2 is predominantly expressed in cerebrum and cerebellum. Ref.2

Post-translational modification

Isoform 1 and isoform 2 are phosphorylated by CAMKK1 Probable.

Sequence similarities

Belongs to the protein kinase superfamily. CAMK Ser/Thr protein kinase family. CaMK subfamily.

Contains 1 protein kinase domain.

Alternative products

This entry describes 2 isoforms produced by alternative splicing. [Align] [Select]
Isoform 1 (identifier: O70150-1)

Also known as: CamKIbeta2;

This isoform has been chosen as the 'canonical' sequence. All positional information in this entry refers to it. This is also the sequence that appears in the downloadable versions of the entry.
Isoform 2 (identifier: O70150-2)

Also known as: CamKIbeta1;

The sequence of this isoform differs from the canonical sequence as follows:
     319-343: GEEASRQGMTRHSHPGLGTSQSPKW → ALLISFPDPCPPDWPLLESPRPWV
