Protein

Leucotoxin LukE

Gene

lukE

Organism
Staphylococcus aureus
Status
Reviewed-Annotation score: -Experimental evidence at protein leveli

Functioni

Part of a bi-component leucotoxin that acts by forming pores in the membrane of the target cells. LukE-LukD is as effective as the Panton-Valentine leucocidin (PVL) for inducing dermonecrosis when injected in the rabbit skin, but not hemolytic and poorly leucotoxic on human blood cells compared to other leucotoxins expressed by S.aureus.1 Publication

Expressioni

Inductioni

Expressed at the late exponential growth. Is cotranscribed with lukD.1 Publication

Interactioni

Subunit structurei

Toxicity requires sequential binding and synergistic association of a class S and a class F component which form heterooligomeric complexes (By similarity). LukE (class S) associates with LukD (class F). LukE can also associate with HlgB.By similarity1 Publication
