General annotation (Comments)
| Function | Glucosyltransferase that uses ADP-glucose as the sugar donor to elongate alpha-glucans Probable. Is involved in the production of the capsular alpha-D-glucan. Ref.3 |
| Catalytic activity | ADP-glucose + (1,4-alpha-D-glucosyl)(n) = ADP + (1,4-alpha-D-glucosyl)(n+1). |
| Pathway | Capsule biogenesis; capsule polysaccharide biosynthesis. Ref.3 |
| Disruption phenotype | Inactivation of glgA affects the production of extracellular alpha-D-glucan (two-fold reduction), but not that of intracellular glycogen and 6-O-methylglucosyl lipopolysaccharides (MGLP). Cells lacking this gene are also impaired in their ability to persist in both the spleen and the lungs of mice. Ref.3 |
| Miscellaneous | Attempts to disrupt both the Rv3032 gene and glgA in order to create a mutant simultaneously deficient in both alpha-1,4-glucosyltransferases turned out to be unsuccessful. Thus, M.tuberculosis H37Rv requires a functional copy of at least one of these two genes for growth. |
| Sequence similarities | Belongs to the glycosyltransferase group 1 family. |
