Pyrococcus yayanosii (strain CH1 / JCM 16557) is the first obligate piezophilic, strictly anaerobic, hyperthermophilic archaeon isolated from the deep-sea hydrothermal site Ashadze on the mid-Atlantic ridge at a depth of 4,100 m. The cells are highly motile irregular cocci with a diameter of about 1-1.5 um. Growth is recorded within a temperature range of 80 to 108 degrees Celsius and a pressure range of 20 to 120 MPa. Temperature and pressure optima for growth are 98 degrees Celsius and 52 MPa respectively. No growth is observed under atmospheric pressures for temperatures ranging from 60 to 110 degrees Celsius. Growth is observed from pH 6 to 9.5 with an optimum at 7.5-8 and salt concentrations from 2.5 to 5.5 % NaCl (optimum 3.5%). (Adapted from PMID: 21705594).
