Filifactor alocis, originally known as Fusobacterium alocis, was first isolated in1985 from the human gingival crevice, and has since been discovered in patients suffering from chronic periodontitis, generalized aggressive, periodontitis and endodontic infections. It has also been isolated from feline soft tissue infections. It is a fastidious, Gram-positive obligately anaerobic rod. Bacteria in periodontal pockets develop complex sessile communities that attach to the tooth surface. F.alocis is involved in numerous structural arrangements, which point to its potential role as one of the architects of structural organization within periodontal biofilms. Strain ATCC 35896 is the type species (adapted from PMID 20193074).
