Gram-negative, microaerophilic, flagellate, spiral bacterium, Campylobacter species are the leading cause of food-borne gastroenteritis in developed countries. Infection with C. jejuni is the most frequent antecedent to a form of neuromuscular paralysis known as Guillain-Barre syndrome. Strain 269.97 is a representative of the C. jejuni subsp. doylei that causes bacteremia in South Africa. At the Red Cross Children's hospital in Cape Town, South Africa, C. jejuni subsp. doylei is isolated from blood more frequently than C. jejuni subsp. jejuni.
