Metal binding

Last modified December 1, 2008

This subsection of the ‘Sequence annotation (Features)’ section indicates at which position the protein binds a given metal ion. The nature of the metal is indicated in the ‘Description’ field.

By definition each ‘Metal binding’ subsection refers to a single amino acid. When there are disinct binding sites for one type of ion, these are listed on separate lines and the ion name is numbered for each distinct site. The actual catalytic or structural role of the metal ion is also reported in this subsection, when applicable. In iron-sulfur proteins, the type of iron-sulfur group is indicated.
Examples: Q9NWT6, P24146, P12851, P00442, P57257,

When a metal is known to interact with a protein via a backbone oxygen or nitrogen atom, this is explicitly indicated in the ‘Description’ field.
Example: P04746

If known, we indicate if the amino acid involved in metal ligation binds to the distal or proximal side of heme. If unknown, we use the term ‘axial’.
Example: P01966, P00163.
